Moderating a board

I have a friend who is moderating a message board but she wanted to know how you would block spam and ads, or do you just have to be vigilant about deleting them. Shes new to it, and I know nothing but I figured some of you might. Does it depend on they type of board etc, etc,

apparently, she has all of that and is still having issues. phpbb.com is what she said she is using.
