I am not talking about the famous, major label bands like Alice in Chains(though I hear they have released a new album with a new singer as well?) and the like. But in the last year a number of local, small label(or NO label in some cases) bands who were once insanely popular, headlining 'bar bands'(some of which were signed to major label deals or ALMOST signed before things went awry) that vanished more than ten years ago, have been coming back to play shows in Seattle and Tacoma.
My Name, The Pleasure Elite, The Dehumanizers...and now RORSCHACH TEST are coming back next month(with Charlie Drown opening) to our local punk/metal/alternative bar! They were one the the absolute best bands to come out of Seattle in the 90s. Sort of a cross between Ministry and KMFDM but more melodic. If the Lemons make a come back then I am going to start re-thinking my atheism!
What is weird about all of this is the eerie paralells between now and 1990-91. Back then the airwaves had been clogged for years with Michael Jackson, boy bands(New Kids on the Block etc.), female dancers who landed recording contracts and 'hair metal'(butt-rock like Poison and such) and when Nine Inch Nails came about, followed soon after by Nirvana, then Pearl Jam and Soundgarden etc., people...even the stupid ones seemed to have had enough of the status quo. We all know what happened after that.
Now the airwaves are clogged with boy bands, female dancers who for some reason have recording contracts, Michael Jackson(because he died) and various crappy top 40 rappers etc. and it seems like not only are the 'major' alternative bands of the 90s making a comeback but a lot of the less major, local bar bands(who were once being offered the world by representatives from the major labels) have been summoned by some necromantic rite to once again demolish the evil that is "Lady Gaga", Michael Jackson, Kid Rock, etc.
I personally do not think a simple revival of 90's music(as much as I love a lot of it) would have more than a nostalgic impact, it does seem humorous to me the way things seem to be going down.
