Every week at www.spawn.com Todd McFarlance has a "ToddCast" where he answers questions for an hour from fans. This week I was actually online when this was taking place so I decided to throw Todd a question about Tim Vigil (just for shits and grins as I think that it would be cool to see TIm ink some of the characters/monsters from the Spawn book). I asked the following: Any possibility Tim Vigil would do any art work on any Spawn related title? Todd answered with the following: **** I remember Tim's work from way back - he's definitely got talent. That being said, I'm very content with the current artistic direction of SPAWN. TODD I just thought that I would share....that is all.

No way would I put his art in my book to show the world he is truely the Master"

Yeah, I remember that being discussed a long time back, i.e. - about how McFarlane stole the idea of Faust and turned it into Spawn. Was there any proof for that? Did McFarlane actually pick up some issues of Faust back in the day? Of course I know he would never admit that, but just wondering why you (Tim) thought he stole the idea?

When I posted the question to Todd I really did it just because it was the only thing I could think of at the time as I did not expect to be online during the hour of "chat", so I had no time to prepare a question. I had never heard of the alleged stolen Faust concept and turning it into the Spawn character, although there do appear to be a lot of resemblences. I had no intention of creating any flame war or ill feelings on this board or the spawn board, just an innocent question I decided to post. You may now return to your regularly scheduled programming....

In return we should get some Faust action figures from McFarlane Toys.

I think Todd's a talented artist, but to be honest I think he's been riding Mr. Vigil's proverbial coattails his entire career. The only difference is that Todd never mastered anatomy. I actually see alot of Tim in Todd's artwork. The dynamic action scenes, the bombastic bloodshed, the decorative panels......really, the artwork in those first few Spawn issues were quite extraordinary, now that I think about it. Of course, Todd was never my favorite Image artist. I prefered the stuff from Silvestri, Lee and Liefeld myself.

No flame war, nobody had taken any shots at you. I got yr back. whether we agree or not about McFarlane's Spawn and the Faust connection, I still think it was cool that Todd showed some respect when he had absolutely nothing to gain by doing so, and he's known for sayi ng some vicious shit about other artists. I think is would have been really easy for Todd to break off some disrespect or sneer about Tim. But he didn't, and I still think that was cool. Back in high school, Todd was the shit, probably the premier mainstream comic book artist that me and my crew of other comic fans and artists looked at in high school. I always thought todd was probably influenced by Tim to some degree. anyway, don't let the fiestiness of our group here get you down. I appreciate yr post. *full disclosure* it's about 10pm here and I've got about a pint of Smirnoff in me, so bear that in mind.

Look, I know perfectly well that all of the Extreme stuff was basically a string of flashy battles featuring guys with gigantic muscles, tiny heads and guns the size of a small car. But you know what? There was something pure about it. I loved it. Plus, unlike McFarlane, Liefeld is actually nice and easy to get along with.
