Hi, another noob to the board!
First things first, I guess. I used to collect comics starting when I was about 14 or so. When I was 17, my cousin started working at a comic shop called Friendly Franks and that is where I really discovered indies. I had bought some here or there and always liked what I saw, but there were usually only a couple titles.
Anyhow, I truly cut my teeth on Faust, Cry for Dawn and the like. My cousin always hooked me up with Faust stuff whenever he got his hands on it at the shop (by hooked me up, I mean put it aside for me to buy, we didn't bite the hand that feeds, in case you're a-wonderin). We used to just talk about various comics amongst ourselves and didn't really have anyone else to bounce ideas or stuff off of. This was around '90-'91 so the internet was an expensive proposition back then. So anyways, he was a Sandman guy and I was Faust guy and neither one of us got the others book choice! To this day I can't read a Sandman comic, I just don't get it!
We also followed some mainstream stuff, me mostly Batman, Spider-Man and the X books (Wolverine has never really been my favorite, I just find his whole story boring...I like what Angel became - Archangel), him all of those plus everything in between. I think that had to do with him having not much to do while at the store. We started reading the Image stuff when it came out. We were also big McFarlane fans. Me more so than him but I liked his fave, Jim Lee, quite a bit so it was a trade off I guess.
Flash forward to May 2007 when I pulled out my collection of 5 long boxes of books. I quit collecting and even just reading comics by 96 or 97 but I kept them, like anyone should do. Long story short, I've been looking at selling some of my stuff (not all, I can't part with some of it!) and started doing research. When I reached the Faust books, my research led me here and I started reading posts and things. Now, I may be a dense person, but I didn't realize just HOW dense I was. Through all of that time I never put McFarlanes Spawn on with Faust! I didn't put the two together. For that matter I didn't even put together that McFarlane works look quite similar to a Vigil work. Granted, McFarlane had developed his artwork to look distinctively McFarlane and Vigil, likewise.
I am now 33. I was about 16 or 17 when I first discovered Faust. I was about 18 when Spawn came out. All of this time and I never figured that one out.
Has McFarlane ever admitted to having read the Faust series or, for that matter, looking at Vigils work?
Can I make this post any longer?
