Flew out to Sacramento Thursday morning to hang with the Vig. We drove to San Francisco for gay sex, er WonderCon. Now for the quick con report.
Breakfast, drawing, Hooters, beer, titties, chicken, beer, sleep. Repeat.
The main reason I'm writing is to talk about the state of Tim Vigil originals. Browsing thru his originals is simply a dream come true.
When I think of Tim's body of work over 20 years the word prolific does not come to mind. After my visit that is no longer the case. You simply wouldn't believe the sheer volume of fantastic prelims, sketches, tightened art from prelims and sketches, reworks of tightened art, finished pencil illustrations, finished ink illustrations, water colors, paintings, etc. Plus all the published work. Also many of the pieces come from fantastic story ideas created by Tim. It's sad the comics industry overlooks this powerful creative force. This is were the ass licking ends and the heart wrenching begins. Tim keeps the vast majority of this art in fucking big moving boxes in his garage. There are 4 very large impossible to move boxes stacked to the brim. The originals are getting creased and damaged.
In these boxes you will find Frazetta prints, random shit people give Tim at cons, posters, other artist's originals, flyers, photocopies, color pieces, photos of naked girls, comic books, pinups, Jimmy Hoffa, the Holy Grail, the cover sleeve to Michael Golden's Dr Strange portfolio, blank paper, sketch books etc.
All of this stuff is mixed with the majority of his originals. EO pages, Faust pages, etc. None of which exist in any order. We even came across the cover painting for his book Artworks. Gorgeous original. So Tim grabs it to pull it out and the weight of other stuff on top tears a good chunk of the bottom left corner. My heart sank. He simply grabs some tape and repairs it with no thought. An intervention is necessary. What is wrong with this man?
The good news is I have seen all of Gothic Nights and they are not in any of those boxes. The only words to describe the GN originals are "Eisner Award Winner Michael Turner".
I wish I could better articulate this experience. Tim is truly a master artist and illustrator. Storage of art not so much.

You can come visit it from time to time then we can go out for some food and see strippers. Just a thought.. p.s dont let Jai have any art he will just trade it away so he can buy his wife shoes that she steps on his balls with...

Jesus christ... this is like leaving your kids out to die of exposure. Only with kids, you can always have more.
Tim needs about 4 die-hards -and I can think of four names right off the top of my head- to go out there sometime and have a working weekend to get this stuff organized.

this does need to happen. we need to plan it around some specific event or whatever. it'll be a bitch to coordinate the times so that the greatest number of us can try to fit our schedules around it.
As most of you know, I was a plumber for many years and I've seen so many water leaks, drain line leaks, A/C condensation drain line blow-outs, fixture supply line blowouts, sewer back ups and water heater leaks and ruptures that it just really concerns me that this art is in the garage, because that's where water (and worse) goes. And we don't even want to think about roof leaks, storm damage and floods.
I am a patron of the arts, and Tim and Joe are personal friends as well as two of the most important influences on my creative being, and I am not willing to see this legacy of art go out. None of us are like the art patrons of the rennassaince or kings, popes and fellowships. we're the working class patrons of the arts in fucking jeans and workboots, but that doesn't mean we can't do our small part in seeing that one of the most important collections of sequential art of the modern era is preserved.
My time is pretty well spoken for for 2007 unless something changes, primarily because of the health of my mother, but I'm seriously thinking in terms of trying to organize this work day around some event like wondercon or san diego of 2008 wherein those of us who are willing and can afford to undertake this project on a pro bono basis arrive either early or stay late after the show. anyway, this is all in the idea stage still, but I do feel it's important.

Keep me informed on BBQ / party / Art clean up at Tim's. A Dyna Pop Revolution Reunion would be cool.

I was a Tim's place a few years back (I think he moved since then), I could certainly make a return trip.
Storage of artwork in usually, on the lower side of things for artiests. I recall Wrightson use to throw out his artwork and Jeff Jones and Kaluta would run to the trash can before the truck picked it up.
Also, Frazetta had/has his art hanging in the play room of his house where they get bumped into all the time.
