That's right! The body is just a material possession, and should be below our concern (as are all material things)! Murder and theft should not be crimes, as they do not affect any one in the big picture. In fact, nothing should be a crime, as no one is fit to judge another. Jai, can I stab you? I guarantee no damage will be done to your soul! I'm 33 BTW. I'm not saying that we shouldn't value material things or have material possessions. I'm also not saying that one should become anarchistic, immoral or unlawful on the basis that one is not their material, physical body. It's a matter of consciousness; realizing that everything is God's (Krishna's) energy and ultimately belongs to Him. In that way we respect and take care of these material bodies, as well as respecting and showing compassion and kindness towards other living beings. We have to live within the material world. It's not an evil or bad place, but the whole point is to be detatched, realizing that it's not a permanent situation. We have to gain self-realization and understanding that we are the soul within the body; we are not our bodies. Because the soul is present, it gives life to the body. When the soul leaves, the body dies. But that doesn't mean the living entity dies. So yeah, anyway, I'm not saying we should just be careless and callous in regards to material things. There are higher laws of karma governing our actions. Sure you can steal things and kill people, but you're going to receive some retribution in the form of negative karma, whether it be in this life or the next. Is this a modern take on it? I thought per the baghavad gita it was cool to fight and kill one's own family on the basis that there is no significant difference between a living and a dead body. Is this just Krishna's way of telling Arjuna to do what he has to do, rather than justifying people doing just whatever action they choose to partake in? That would make sense, but it seems to allow for a lot of interpretation as it is. (get it? as it is? oh, that's funny to me, ho ho ho)

That would make sense, but it seems to allow for a lot of interpretation as it is. (get it? as it is? oh, that's funny to me, ho ho ho) Well the whole thing with Bhagavad-gita is that it's about surrending to Krishna's will and desire, rather than being attached to one's own selfish desires. Shrila Prabhupad has said that the Bhagavad-gita is not preaching non-violence. Violence is sometimes necessary in regards to defending or protecting the innocent. (Of course who can say what justifies war is a whole other can of worms.) Arjuna didn't want to fight against his relatives and kinsmen, but Krishna told him that they were already dead, because He (Krishna) had willed it. If Arjuna did not kill them, then Krishna, in the form of all-devouring Time, would have. So Arjuna had to become detatched and become an instrument in Krishna's hands. In the end Arjuna fully surrenders to Krishna's will and carries out his duty, fully detatched and in full self-realization that he's not the body and that all these material relationships are temporary and illusory.

It does basically sound like the same line all the nut jobs use who claim "God told me to kill them"
Me, I'm a big believer in doing what makes me happy and gives me pleasure now. I dont buy into the whole dont enjoy life now because the afterlife is where its at. I'm afraid there are going to be a whole lot of disapointed people when they find out they arent going to Disney Land when they die.
However if religion and the promise of an afterlife makes you happy, I think thats a good thing because it makes you happy "now".
Religion is basically set up to give hope to the hopeless for something better down the road and a moral compass for society.

I have never had problems witht he Witnesses. They have always respected me more than the typical chritian that clutches their bible to their chest and screams at me in the grocery stores and gas stations.
