This is a thread for those who have already seen The Dark Knight.
SO THERE ARE GOING TO BE SPOILERS HERE! DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE YET!!!
****************************
Alright, so let's get into this, for those of us who have seen it. I'm really curious to hear from UK what it was specifically about the ending that bothered him so much.
One of the things that I thought was silly was that whole sonar cell phone thing at the end. I mean, okay, one cell phone doing that in one building, I'll buy that. But at the end with EVERY cell phone in Gotham City creating a whole sort of sonar world? And then Batman seeing it through his glowing eyes? LAME! That really bothered me. The whole time I was like, "This is so cheesey".
The ending didn't really bother me, because I could understand Batman wanting to put Harvey Dent in a positive light and taking the light off of himself and vigilantism. It just seemed so weird to have it end so abruptly with Batman running, jumping on his cycle and WHAM, it's over. I think it would have been more interesting to have it end with the Joker sitting in Arkham Asylum or something. Or at least give us one of those cool, holy shit there's going to be an awesome sequel, tease endings, like by showing Two Face still alive or something.
Other than that, like you said UK, I could suspend my disbelief for the most part of the film. But I'm still curious to hear your gripes about it, because I didn't think it was all that bad.

my geekness let me cruise right past the cell phone sonar thing ( this is Batman and he's supposed to have unbelievable stuff right ;D). the voice that UK hated worked for me also ( figure he couldn't let himself sound at all like Bruce Wayne)...if fact i pretty much loved everything about the movie. my only complaint is that i couldn't hear what Gordan was telling his son at the end of the movie as Batman run off because the music drowned out ( at least with my upper-end hearing loss ass ) the vocal so if anyone caught I'd love to know what he said. the other thing, the guy that was gonna bust Wayne on being Batman...was he anybody in the comics ? ( kinda thought it was like a set up for the Riddler or something)

Interesting point, Mike, about that guy who was going to rat out Bruce Wayne. Maybe he'll end up being in the next one, because he knows, right?
As far as what Gordon was telling his son, first his son said, "Why is he running?" And Gordon says something like, "Because we have to catch him, son". Then he says something about...I don't even remember! It was some mumbo jumbo about good and evil. All I kept thinking was, "This can't be how they're going to end this!" Then the last line is something like he's Gotham's Dark Knight or how Gotham needs a Dark Knight. Something like that.
Also, I can understand the need for the whole raspy voice thing, but I agree with UK that it was so extreme that it became almost comical and silly.

Guys, keep in mind that they had to completely change the end because Heath Ledger died.

are you sure? I thought he'd completed filming his part. but if so, it does make sense that they would have to rework it.

The original ending was heavily dependent on the fact that he would be coming back in next summer's sequel. He has signed the deal for it and everything. They changed it so they could do something else with the next movie.

That would actually explain A LOT. I wonder what the original ending was supposed to be like??

Guys, keep in mind that they had to completely change the end because Heath Ledger died. if you're right, then it renders much of my complaints as nothing more than nit-picking. and i hate a person who nitpicks an otherwise great movie to death. I still have one problem with one ridiculous scene. but I'll talk about that later.

Saw this last night. It didn't "blow me away" like everyone said it would. It was OK, but nothing too special IMO. I like the extra violence, that was good. It is definitely the most violent Batman movie to date. I liked that part of it a lot.
But I also have to agree with UK that Bale took the Batman voice a bit too far in this one. It was actually distracting and borderline stupid. Too much. The fight scenes were very tame as well and not all that exciting, and Bale to me seemed detached from the film. I thought his acting was much better in Batman Begins than in this one, honestly. And the sonar part? That was stupid. I thought it took away from the "maturity" of the film and was really unnecessary. They could have come up with something better than that. I didn't like that part at all and was rolling my eyes through that whole scene.
Ledger was good and I like his Joker WAY better than what Nicholson did. He was definitely the best part of the flick. Although I thought the first half of the movie was pretty boring and standard fare (I wasn't very impressed with Batman flying around like a bird and all that jazz), I felt the drama picked up in the second half and was much more interesting. I liked it more with just the Joker talking about his childhood with his mother and father and how he felt about killing his victims and all that.
Overall it's an OK movie, the best Batman flick to date IMO. But deserving of all the hype? Eh, I don't think so.
P.S. - I didn't see anything wrong with the ending at all. It was fine to me.

yeah, but what about the whole two ferries drama. One full of citizens and one full of criminals? And they ALL decided not to blow each other up? In Gotham Fucking City?!!! That shit was funny. And when fuckin D-ball from Friday (Tiny Lister) got up and menaced the shit out of that cop to get the detonator and then threw it out the window? Man, I about fell out. That whole scene could have been cut out. Should have been. Not even I can suspend my disbelief that far.
And the ending was a whimper, Batman just *tackles* two face? Where's the fight, yo? And before that, one bullet from two-face's pistol dropped batman in what was supposed to be a tension building scene? And Bats in full body armor?
Then Batman takes five bodies -murdered cops mind you- on his own back? That just felt like an unBatman like move.
These are the things when, taken as a whole and not any one incident, added to the grunting voice, the pitiful full city sonar deal, just doomed it for me. No one thing did it, but the cumulative effect was to make it end disappointingly to me.
And at least three times during this fucker we had to hear variations of "this may not be the hero Gotham needs, but it's the hero Gotham deserves" or "The Hero Gotham gets is the one it must have, because the hero is a Gotham hero and Gotham heroes may not be what Gotham desires, but it's what Gotham must have because a hero is more than a sammich." Fuck.
Biggest weak point to me was the part with the ferries and the bombs. that was so far out it doesn't even qualify for status as science fiction.
Fuckin bad ass movie up till then, though. "I'm gonna make this pencil disappear!" I fucking loved that. Started laughing. One of the best Joker lines in History!

I thought you were just complaining like Jai that it ended "abruptly." I didn't feel that way, and sometimes abrupt endings like that work. I usually like them. A very good example is the James Woods' flick "Cop." Very good ending IMO. I recommend that movie if any of you haven't seen it yet, btw. But I digress... I see what you mean. I felt the same way when I saw Batface go down with that one shot. I was like, "WTF?" Yup, that was weak and it didn't make any sense. I agree.

"I'm gonna make this pencil disappear!" I fucking loved that. Started laughing. One of the best Joker lines in History! That was a pretty awesome scene. One part that made me laugh out loud too was when he was walking out of the hospital after seeing Harry Dent and was blowing the place up. He looked hilarious, number one. But when he tried his detonator again and then the place really started going to shit, when he took off and jumped into the bus I started dying! He just looked funny as hell to me when he did that.
