I have not gotten to the comic shop yet to check my file. Will get on ebay tomorrow to find the variant cover(your's) since my LCS seems incapable of reserving that for me.

anyone seen 3? whats the verdict? Okay, so after seeing that this was out I went to my LCS and picked up a copy today. Here's my two cent review: I have to be honest that I emotionally checked out from the story after the first issue. The genre just isn't something that I'm interested in, so it makes it even harder to read it in this illustrated book format where it's heavy on the reading. I've just been skimming the words to find relevant information and plot lines. So I can't really offer much of a critique on the writing. Basically I've just been picking the book up because I love seeing anything that you (Tim) work on. The panels are unfortunately cursed by one of your major weaknesses: the panels you love are detailed and the panels you hate are rather lackluster. There are no page numbers to reference, but the scene where Red is walking through the jungle and the scene on the beach with the wizard-dude in front of the statue and people bowing down; those panels are rather weak and lacking the detail that's in some of the bigger panels (one guy doesn't even have a nose!). The bigger panels that really stick out are the one where Red is gutting open that leopard-creature and the one where the jungle girl is holding her bleeding neck and Red is cutting off that vine-thingy's head. Those are beautifully done and the jewels of the book. I noticed you used that convention and composition three times, though, i.e. - a view from behind, seeing the backs of Red and the girl as some action took place. It kind of makes it look like you were having fun with that composition and so kept using it over and over, but not with any purpose or intention other than you thought it looked cool. And perhaps that's not a bad thing, because it DOES look cool! It's just something I noticed. It reminds me of Frank Cho...and even Frazetta himself. I don't understand what happened in the story where the hand pops up from the vines. The story doesn't explain that ape-creatures head being cut off, yet on the next page you see Red with its severed head and killing that dude with its horn. I also kind of stopped reading there too, so I wasn't sure what the fuck was going on with the wizard guy's head on the end of the vine being stuck to that dude's back. And I thought that panel would have been more exciting if you actually saw Red stabbing the guy with the horn. Have you been using pens for inking? I noticed it on the inking on the girl in some places that it doesn't look like brush work. It's really noticeable in the scene where she's sitting on Red's cot and trying to get him to suck her boobie (which by the way he's totally gay for not tapping that!). I'm not even going to bother mentioning what I usually mention when it comes to the coloring. I'm looking forward to the book going back to a traditional comic book format for the grand finale. And I'm also looking forward to you having more time after this to finish Faust 14 and 15 already!

ok good view. what about others? i felt there was more art but needed biggerpieces still. i like the format but with more art then words. i thought some of the real nice art was colored great,,the cuttung of gut is sweet and the head chop is real nice. still some like the wizard on beach with natives needed darker colors,,,live and learn...over all grade anyone?

Picked the book up last night and read it as soon as I got home.
The writing this time out is, as Jainitai mentioned above...a bit hit and miss. The scene where the horned ape-thing is killed...or rather he's NOT killed but somehow ends up dead with his head severed, that sucked. The story was generally kind of hard to follow the way things bounced between the narration from the grandfather and his toothless crone to the boy Finn and the story itself of Morden and his adventure. Too many times I had to go "WTF?! Oh...I see. It is the grand dad talking to the boy now(not Red talking to whomever)...".
The toothless crone character seems to be kind of forced/contrived and unnecessary as well.
AS for the art, I agree with most of what Jainitai said(except I liked the panel on the beach with the worshipers and the wizard. I don't think this needed more detail really.). Every once in a while there is some weirdness in a panel...an arm that seems too weirdly twisted/contorted or legs that seem stunted/dwarfed or a general lack of detail where detail IS needed. But overall the whole thing was well done. Not your absolute best work Tim but also much better than, say some of the stuff you did for First Comics(I hated those Sable covers and some of the pages in Zero tolerance).
I cannot wait for the finale! I think this will be a great means of exposing your art to a larger audience since Death Dealer features prominently in the last issue.
I agree with you that more art and less text would greatly improve things. I am a big fan of the genre(unlike Jainitai I guess) but there is still this sense that reading all this text and only getting the occasional illustration is more work than enjoyment at times.

True, true. I agree that the words outweighed the artwork. Did you create more art for this and it just wasn't used? Because it seems like you're surprised by the quantity of images as well. Oh, and overall grade? Overall Story: didn't really read it, so I can't grade it. Overall Art: B+ (only because not all of the panels had the same consistency and quality, but those two favorite panels of mine got A's). Speaking of a format like this, are you still working with that one guy to create that "Dante's Inferno" style book? Did you ever make more illustrations for that?

I thought you were saying of issue 14 of Faust and I almost shit myself! Then I realized you meant issue 4 of Dark Kingdom, which is awesome, but not as awesome as Faust 14. Would you send me 11x17 copies of Faust 14 if I send you $15??
