Let me know if you're serious. Guess you were kidding. Just so everyone knows, Tim wasn't kidding about getting a photocopied Faust 14 for $25. I confirmed it with him. I can't believe more of you aren't excited and jumping on this like a hobo on a ham sandwich!

I can't believe more of you aren't excited and jumping on this like a hobo on a ham sandwich! Jai, The money is sent out today. Thanks for getting Tim to give us photocopies of the book. Though, it might be weird reading the Faust 14 if it's just the art and no word balloons. I really thought Tim was joking. But I was wondering what Tim exactly said in your email? Or what did you say to convince Tim? Because, I figured Tim would let everybody wait till the book came out to surprise the readers.

I didn't convince Tim of anything. He's the one that said he'd do it right here in this thread. And if you've ever corresponded with Tim via email you'll know he's a man of few words. Basically I asked him if he was serious about the offer and he wrote back, "yes". That was it. Personally I think because Tim is such a great visual storyteller that you'll still be able to understand what's going on even without words. I can't wait to see it! I feel like I've been waiting forever since 13 came out. And I can't speak for Tim, but he probably felt like it's still going to be awhile before 14 is officially printed and released. And with the way that Diamond is now with not carrying books that have under 5,000 or 10,000 orders (or whatever the number is), he's probably also realizing that even when 14 and 15 are done it's going to be hard to get it distributed. Just a guess on my part, though.

We should start a movement protesting Diamond's 'Independent-hostile' practicies. If we could get a web site set up and a few thousand people to sign the petition thing then we may be able to change this.

A website and some names on a list will never change Diamond's position. I'm not defending Diamond, but as a business they have every right to place a minimum (which is in the 900 - 1,100 copy range) on a product. They make about $0.30 to $0.50 per comic to distribute it across the world. On 1000 books that's $300 to $500 (depending on cover price).
Geppi's empire has fallen on hard time, though. The museum has bled money and resulted in a lawsuit over unpaid rent. They lost the rights to the Disney reprints long before the Disney/Marvel deal was started. Diamond has spent millions in upgrading facilities to improve service and minimize labor costs, to streamline and become profitable. So Diamond installed minimums because internally they determined that they need more than $300 to $500 per comic to make a profit. This is why things are the way they are.
The bigger issue is that Diamond is considered the only distributor of comic books. Anything they do that goes against comics is counter intuitive. They won the distributor war outright after Heroes World collapsed and Marvel declared bankruptcy. As the only option, we wish they would be forced to do everything they can to help comics.
The good news, I suppose, is that Haven Distributing have really amped up their game the last 6 months. They are not a legitimate option to Diamond, but they are the best 2nd choice available. They are now the 'indie friendly' distributor. They have very easy minimums to hit. The problem is that their products are virtually exclusively indie books. They do work with some 'larger' publishers such as Fantagraphics (who are now a Diamond choice client and as such the discount stores receive is higher and the back stock Diamond maintains on books is larger, so why order Fanta books from Haven?), Drawn and Quarterly, and Haven signed a deal with BOOM! to carry their non-first run books (so, basically, Haven has a similar deal with BOOM! that Diamond has with Dark Horse, DC, Image, Marvel, Fanta... they will carry inventory of books to allow reorders). But the positive spin is that with those 3 publishers, stores can now order some obscure indie comics and hit the minimums, because the D+Q/Fanta books have much higher cover prices which will take up the $ required to get to the minimum.
As long as Haven doesn't go under due to their surely massive increase in costs recently, and Haven continues to grow their relationships with smaller 'big' publishers similar to BOOM!, they will be a great second option and give retailers really looking for a book such as Faust (or Jack the Lantern) the ability to order and stock these books.
Of course, this still doesn't solve the problem of getting these titles the attention of retailers, convincing a retailer that this is a book that they need to stock, a book that will take up shelf space from a currently selling (and making them money) book. Make no mistake, the print world is having a crisis: just look at the huge chain bookstores in the US and UK. Comics are no different. It's been a bloodbath the last 1 1/2 years.
This isn't the 80's where a cool indie was ordered, large or small, and sold to a customer looking for something different. Those 'something different' customers seem to have disappeared. Hence the lack of ordering. Hence the Diamond minimums. Hence the rise of Haven. It's really up to publishers/creators to advertise to the public/readers AND retailers -- because Diamond/Haven don't advertise their product -- to build interest, then provide a great product.
The risk adversity level of most comic retailers is low, I won't say zero, but low. If they order in 2 copies of a book and only 1 sells, they have made no money. Money they need to pay rent, hydro, water, staff, inventory costs. Which explains why they order so low. Order 2, sell both, make some money. Next time order 3 or 4. If those all sell, now we're rolling, it justifies ordering even more the next time. But if they get burned, and only sell 1 of 2 ordered, they likely only order 1 or 2 next time. If the end customer, the comic reader, doesn't want the comic, the retailer isn't interested in holding the comic as back stock inventory. Those days have passed.

Thanks for the information. Certainly a lot more to consider than I was initially taking into consideration. It is a real pickle because going digital is a flat out bad option(I suspect I am not alone in being both a reader AND a collector) but at the same time print is becoming prohibitively expensive.
