YES!! Just won Grips Portfolio #2 + Grips Premier edition(ashcan) for $112! Big fan of Ebay right now! No I am not a 'Grips fan' but I have been wanting these early Silverwolf portfolios for my Vigil collection forever! I already had the Grips Premier ashcan but having a second won't hurt I guess.
I was kind of lucky because I bid $300 thinking it was the portfolio alone and I fully expected someone would jack the bidding up through the roof...but they didn't.
Now I just need the 1st and 3rd Grips portfolios, the DragonQuest portfolio and the Nightmaster portfolio and I will be set!

I am happy you i won, but I don't think that is Grips portfolio # 1. When you get it #1 says Liberty 86, # 2 says Liberty II 86, # 3 says Liberty 87. He was sells grips ashcan #1 and a portfolio. # 3 is by far the hardest to find. I have only seen 3 or 4 or them ever.
of # 1,2,3 all were on brown paper. limited signed and numbered also unsigned editions were made. There are also bootleg copies around on blue paper. I can double check, I have all of the above.
# 4 and 5 were in envelopes, #6 no envelope.
I have brown and blue editions of the dragonquest and the nightmaster portfolios but none were signed so I am not sure the source. never seen signed and numbered ones.
Still you got something that is rare these days! hope this helps\

It is the genuine portfolio, #ed 81 of 100 and the plates do say "Liberty 86" on them and they are on the same beige stock that all 5 of the Vigil original portfolios were printed on(I have 4, 5 and 6 but 6 is just covers and splash pages from the comic book issues). This is the first time I have ever seen an actual #1 Grips portfolio ever. If I EVER see #2 and 3 for sale I will jump all over it. Yeah I think you alerted me to the blue bootlegs before. Does that mean that 1, 2, and 3 were NOT in envelopes? I have had 4 & 5 since around 1988 or so...I ordered them through an ad in Comic Values Monthly or some such. Yeah I had ordered the DragonQuest and Nightmaster ones from Underworld but he shafted me on them which is why he has not been around in almost a year. I would think the blue ones COULD be the bootlegs except for the fact that GMC/Silver DID print a few portfolios on blue paper.

hey p.d., that cparadise austion is "the art of tim vigil" it's packaged with the nightmaster plate on top. the one in the auction was probably opened and the plates moved around. put out by greater mercury. at least i think that's what it is. ps.- if anyone has a grips port. 3 and or 6, i need them, northstar port. also. ;D

It has 2 or 3 covers from the comic book as plates and a few splash page reproductions(like the full page head shot from Grips #1) as well. If you have an alternate email or no self-esteem you can order it directly from Kris Silver probably at silverwolf.info. If it is not listed there then shoot him an email asking about it. I remember I decided to butter him up by ordering a few of his "Novels" before he confirmed to me that he had some of the old SW portfolios(of course I was looking for the rare, good Vigil stuff but still I got the Art of Tim Vigil, Grips Port. #6, The Art of Roman Morales III/Edge portfolio and some other rare items) . But failing that I could send you one...all you'd have to do is send me an envelope big enough to hold the portfolio and some cardboard packing, along with your mailing address on it(because I am a lazy/inattentive bastard and there is no telling when I would get around to doing this if I had to go hunt down an envelope). And yes, you are correct about the "Art of Tim Vigil" portfolio from GMC that is linked to in PD's post I have a few of that one as well. It featured plates made up of the covers from Nightmaster #1 & #2/GMC Action #7, DragonQuest #1 and Grips #s 1,3,4,5 as well as that Nightmaster advertisement picture that appeared on the back cover of Dragonquest #1 IIRC.

yes that is the art of TV portfolio put out by Kris Silver. He did that way after Grips during the Greater Mercury days. I was doing shows next to him when i was distributing.
All the 1st grips portfolios are confusing because I think the silverwolf index book is wrong. I would have to dig out my old stuff and check them out.
as far as in envelopes.
1,2,3 no envelopes for sure! 4 and 5 in printed envelopes. 6 no envelope.

yes greater mercury made some blue portfolios.. grips vol 2 and psychopath portfolios were blue as i remember. the silver wold index is a good reference but again it seems like the numbering is wrong?? i will dig out what i have and see.
there are loads of 4,5,6 portfolios, some on ebay right now i think, .. but 1,2,3 are truly rare. i think i paid $200. for a number 3 limited 15 years ago. if you buy a # 4 or 5 make sure the envelope is not glues down, i bought a bunch way back and the envelope was basically junk. i think they all had got wet.
and on the dragonquest and nightmaster ones, i am not positive they were ever made. maybe only bootlegs?? again i have white, brown, and maybe blue ones.
i can't answer every question but i might be able to help research the older vigil stuff.

i am not trying to be a wise-ass. the history of the vigil bros. is of high interest to me. the one in the ebay photo says
II Liberty 86
i think it is # 2. i think # 2 is harder to find than #1. so good deal anyway. i can use another grips ashcan if it is for sale.

Oh I see what you are saying now...I thought you were saying the portfolio(which for some reason I was assuming was a #1...bad memory I guess) was a fake or something. I would have to check one of my Grips #1 issues in the back to see for sure(#1s 1 and 2 are shown in full glory in the back of Grips #1 SW), but you are probably right that it is #2. In any case I am happy either way as I needed BOTH. bastard: No money for the Portfolio #6 if you send me the self-addressed envelope and whatever postage is necessary to mail it from Tacoma, WA to wherever you are at.

I have all of these as well as the "David Hayes Color Portfolio" which I think is also on blue paper(but in color). Only #5(the worst one he did. Literally looks like he was late to his own funeral when he scribbled it out) is ever on ebay. #4 is pretty good stuff(as seen on the back of SW Grips #4). Same here with #s 4 and 5. I bought 2 or 3 copies of #4 and 3 or 4 copies of #5 about 20 years ago and they all had the glued envelopes(which all got ripped open) but the plates themselves were undamaged. Yeah I am tempted to adopt my alternate personality and ask Kris Silver about these... You have been most helpful!
