i think Joes shading with pencil is much better than coloring, especially his universal monsters collection

Yeah well...not for long . I thought this came out pretty good especially since I was going for a more natural look and I'm just figuring out Photoshop. This had a shit load of layers and was very difficult. I'll send Gregg the pencil tomorrow so he can post it. Personally I like both the b/w and color.

As of right now I personally dont like it. Just being honest, it looks very cartoonish, animated to me.

That's a valid criticism but I think that is the nature of the computer beast. It makes everything look plastic and unnatural. When the airbrush came out it received the same complaints. On this color exercise though I was trying to get as far away from the computer coloring the ' pros' do as I could. I hate that one color layer effect they use. I wanted to see if I could blend the colors with the tools I had at my disposal and for the most part it worked. I was working from memory and not a photo so I'm sure I made a few mistakes, like I think a darker side shadow would have made her face more 3D, a few more highlights, but it came out fine for what it is. I did play around with the hue intensity and that also brings out the artificiality of the piece but I like bright colors and most people don't. Tough titty. She does have the whitest fucking teeth I've ever seen though...DAMN!

Personally knowing the difficulties of coloring realistically in Photoshop, I can give kudos to Joe for this piece. I still haven't figured out the "secret" myself of creating a photo-realistic colored image in Photoshop. I think a lot of it has to do with the brushes you use...and a million other little details! I saw this one book on Photoshop where this guy was doing realistic portraits that looked like real photographs and he did it all free-hand. It was sick. Anyway, I think you did a pretty good job Mr. Joe, considering the circumstances you mentioned.

The secret to painting in Photosop is...... DON'T!! Use Corel Painter, and don't go for realistic, go for painterly. That's just my opinion and since I'm a newb to these boards I'm sure I'll get trashed for it.

I think that looks bad as fuck Joe. It looks techie and stuff, but with that face and smile, the coloring is perfect. The highlights on the brow and cheekbone are great.
And Damn Joe, I always forget about that avatar of yours. Its usually on for a bit before I notice.

heh...I didn't mean to say realistic is not cool, cuz I think it is. All my charcoal stuff is fairly realistic, I'll have to post something one of these days. Even when using Painter I tend to push into detail myself. It's all just tools. What I was really tring to say is that if you come from a traditional art background, Painter tends to feel a lot more like using paint or any medium and real paper than does Photoshop. Photoshop definately has its strong points. Easy to work with layers, selection tools with no equal, and a good assortment of filters. I don't know what DogWaffle is....... If digital stuff is interesting you more and more and you'd like to give painter a try, I think they offer a free 30 day trial, and someone(maybe me) might be able to hook you up with an activation code so you could use it afterwards. Hell, it's really cheap enough that just about anyone with a decent income can afford it. Glad to see the whole Rebel Studios crew up here BTW. Like I said in another post, Faust is the comic that got me into comics, and I sure thought the original GIH was kick ass as well. Does David Quinn post on these boards by any chance? If so, what's his user name. I met him on the way to CCI one year and he gave me his email but I never contacted him. Maybe I'll have to try digging it out. Oh yeah. The pics real nice, I like the pencils better also though you did a fairly good job faking the color. And for a first timer!?! Bitchin.
