Just saw this film last night. Excellent! Beautifully filmed and superbly acted, it's one of the better films I've seen in a while. It's been called a "fairy tale for adults" and that's pretty much on the mark. Set in Spain during WWII, it at times shows scenes of brutal violence and cruelty. A lonley young girl sent to live with her sadistic stepfather, who is also a captain in the military, escapes into a world of fauns and fairies and is given a quest to see her "real" father. Is this an alternate reality or is it all in her imagination? That's up for debate.
Even in the fantasy world, there are some disturbing images and deaths. Not for children by any means. It also has the very definition of a "bittersweet ending."
Written and directed by Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy), it's in Spanish with English subtitles. One of the first films I've seen where the translation is spot on, because it was translated by del Toro himself.
Haunting music score, awesome cinematography, and great acting, this is a powerful "fantasy" film. I recommend it.

I'm a day late and a dollar short on this, but I just recently saw this movie the other day. I was really impressed. At first I had my doubts, but the parallel story lines draw you in and you find yourself hooked and mesmerized by the events that unfold. Really amazing film. I give it a 10 on the Jai-o-meter.
