So by now all of you have seen my Tim Vigil time-lapsed videos of him drawing and inking. Well on the inking video the comments have been getting heated. There's a couple of people that commented to my remarks regarding Jim Lee's lack of evolution as an artist. Apparently there's a view that Tim also hasn't/isn't evolving as an artist and that his style is "old school". It's interesting, because this is what I heard from Bob Shreck (previous Batman Editor-in-Chief). It seems that there are people out there that think Tim is stuck in the 80's and that his style is no longer relevant. It makes me wonder, "So to be noticed and recognized as a comic book illustrator today you HAVE to draw like and ape off of a contemporary artist like Jim Lee, Adam Hughes, Scott Campbell, etc.?" That's really the problem with today's modern comic book industry. It's all about trends and what's "hot" and what sells. I know it's a business, but come on. It seems like almost every current, hot artist is drawing like Jim Lee. But WHY do comic book artists feel like they have to draw like Jim Lee to be successful? I don't get it. You can have role models and inspirations, but why not just draw like your SELF? Travis Charest is a great example of someone that started drawing like Jim Lee, but evolved into his own style and voice. Anyway, if any of you here want to get involved with the discussion, feel free to chime in: www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pNrmlzwg3I&feature=channel_page
