Hey all, just wanted to share a brief encounter I had with Steve Mannion this past Saturday at the Big Apple Con in NYC. He's such an awesome and down-to-earth guy. He doesn't have one of those usual "big heads" that most artists have. He's very humble and (as you've probably seen) an amazing artist. You should pick up his work and support him.
He's such a friendly guy that he was willing to do what Jim Lee wouldn't do for me. A long while back at a Wizard World Philly show I asked Jim Lee if he would draw a Batman cowl and cape on a photo of himself. He just smiled and said, "Uhh, no". It would have only taken him 10 seconds. I still don't know why he wouldn't do it. But when I told the story to Steve and asked him if he would do it, he at first hesitated and said half-jokingly, "I need to ask my advisor first". He then asked a friend of his that was standing there who gave a nod of approval. I think he was a little hesitant because it didn't want the picture ending up all over the internet and being made to look like it was making fun of Jim Lee or something.
Anyway, so he quickly whipped this up in about 10 seconds. I asked him to sign the bottom. My dream was finally realized:
I then asked Steve if he was doing commissions. He said he was doing two sizes, $60 and $80, fully inked. I only had $40 with me, so I asked him if he would do a small one. He said it would be 40 minutes (a dollar per minute), but since I didn't have much time (I ditched my wife and had to meet her at Washington Square Park for a Hare Krishna festival that was going on at the same time) I asked him if he would just do a quick 5 - 10 minute sketch and that I'd give him $20. So he whipped this up for me:
And finally I asked him if he would pose for a picture. Here are the two pictures I took:
He even hammed it up by posing:
Again, he's just a really nice guy. If you have the chance to meet him or get some work from him, then do it. You won't be disappointed.
