Not only is Mr. Hughes an amazing art, but the sumofabitch could make a decent living just drawing commissions/convention sketches! Can you imagine that being your job? "Hey Adam, what do you do for a living?" "Oh, I just draw sketches for people." That's my frigg'in dream job right there!
When I was at the NY Big Apple Con in 2007 he was there. I believe at the time he had a list of about 40 people that were signed up for sketches. And they were $200 a pop (if my memory serves me). So he was making $8,000 tax free, just sitting there for three days drawing sketches! And don't get me wrong, they're not bad sketches, but they're obviously not labors of love. He's using sharpie markers for poop's sake. He can probably crank them out without much thought.
So anyway, I was watching some videos of him on YouTube. I really want to get a commission from him of Claire or Faust. So I decided to look on Ebay just to see what was out there and I came across this:
cgi.ebay.com/Original-Adam-Hughes-Sketch-of-YOUR-Choice_W0QQitemZ250460345318QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a509993e6&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12|66%3A2|39%3A1|72%3A1240|293%3A1|294%3A50
So he's not doing the usual sign ups for commissions at the SDCC, but he's doing this auction. Three days, three sketches. Look at what the auction prices are already up to! He's probably going to end up making between $5-6,000 for three 11x14 illustrations! Gottdam! That's about how much I make in 6 months working part time in retail.
I envy that man. I guess you just have to be good and lucky (and have the karma) to make it to that level. Drats.
