Okay campers, I got my two copies of Faust 13. Anyone else get theirs yet? I want to have a little debate here and see what everyone thought about it. I haven't sat down and read it carefully yet, just skimmed it and I couldn't help but feel a little disappointed or somehow jipped. When I got to the back cover I was like, "That's it..?! I waited two years for THIS?!" It just seems like a lot of rambling on the part of M and no action, almost like Quinn was trying to pack in a lot of dialog and story in a tiny space. But I don't know. I'll have to read it closely and maybe it'll be more entertaining and enthralling, but my gut reaction was that it just felt boring and empty. Anyway, it's out and it's good, but it just seems like it didn't have to take 2 years to get it. Maybe half a year. And can someone explain the end of the issue to me? I really don't get what's going on or what direction it's going. Can't wait until everyone's read it and we can discuss it. Comic book geeks rock!

My guess? Half you will like it the other half will think it blows. Just chalk it up as supporting a cause! Who put this out REBEL or broeknhalos?

Faust: LotD's is officially a Rebel book. I helped with production, but Tim did the majority of it this time around believe it or not. Jai kind of dug into the book and changed his view of it, so I don't have to spend too much time figuring out what happened to his sense of art-appreciation... but, like Red Dog said, I appreciate anyone who's willing to be honest regardless of their opinion. Course, anyone that judges a book like Faust on a flip-through should stick to the nifty-colored funny books from DC or Marvel.

Okay, if Northman hadn't moved my original post here to the Broken Halos section I wouldn't have looked like such a harsh critic. I wrote this post AFTER I posted my original above post: "Hey, what happened to the other thread I started? Damn moderators! Anyway, it's good that it was erased, because I was saying that Faust 13 seemed disappointing on my initial skim through it. But I just finished reading it, like taking the time to digest it and enter into it. It's sweet! Great mood and great pacing setting up some grand finale. John Jaspers at the end...woo yeah, #14 is going to rock! Just a great, great story and Tim's art is at its best. Has anyone else got it yet? What did all of you think? I can't wait to discuss it, because I had a couple questions." So there you have it. I'm still a die hard fan.

It does seem a little slow at first glance, so yeah, I can see where Jai was coming from in his initial posting.
But the ending. . .whoah. . .finally we start to glimpse of where Jaspers is heading and why he was depicted the way he was in Darkness In Collision. Jade's role (something I've wondered about for a long time now) also seems to be coming into clearer focus.
Artwise, topnotch of course. I wish all of Tim's books could look like this (and be out on some kind of schedule). Visually, this puts everything else on the stands to shame.
The interior credits kicked ass! Good job, LL.

If you thought it sucked at first glance no big deal. If you still think it sucks its no big deal. I'm not going to tell anyone their shit is good when its not and I wouldn't expect anyone here to do it either. I'm glad you did end up liking it, I was getting dissapointed since I'm still waiting on mine.

Are Grimm and I the only one's who have read this so far?? I thought there'd be a huge buzz of discussion, but I guess a lot of you haven't even got it yet.

Ok, I did a quick read through. My first impression: Its was good, not great, but good.
It just doesn't have the impact the first issues had, but then again I think they dropped in substance around issue 8 or 9.

I thought it was great. I especially dug all Quinn's dialog that is a combination of theology, existentialism and pycho-bable. I loved the revelation of a long time bit player in the story and the ending blew me away. I don't want to spoil it for anyone but if you read what Faust is saying along with the caption at the top of the page that is a continuation of what the character i mentioned above was saying, I think it's pretty clear. The art was typical Tim Vigil "A" work but nothing better than past issues and I doubt if anything will top Eo and Gothic nights as far as art goes.
The thing that I thought has gotten beter in Tim's art is that in the first few issues i thought some off the panels where nothing much was going on, the art was definitely weaker than some of the splash type panels. The last few Faust issues including this one, all of the panels were consistantly great.
So no disappointment here. I'm looking foward to 14 even more than I was 13

Read it twice, and although I thought it was a solid effort, I felt it was more like a "fill-in" issue, not necesarily done by someone else, but that it didn't advance the story much to its conclusion, and that we'd have been better off waiting another year to get this and 14 together as one double size issue, wrapping the story up and being done.
I guess I'm just of the mind state that after all this time I'd like to see this put to bed, and other projects coming out/finished ( EO being finished, BH, Sinbuck) than to limp along with what amounts to a "Here, just so you don't forget about us, here we are" kinda of issue.
I've been following the Vigil Bros a long time, so I'm not coming at this like a newjack, but it'd be nice to say "its done." when it comes to Faust.

This is true, but unfair, IMO. The first 4 issues were drawn in a year? This book took 3? Of course you have the ability to put fine detail into a minor panel. On top of that, there were ink assists on many other issues, resulting in some dilution. Really, the growth has occurred in the body structure of the people. Tim is capable of drawing forced perspective of a hand and face FAR better -- such as the Neal Adamseque panel of M. His facial structures and body postures, the drape of clothes; all of this is miles beyond his original abilities. His understanding of 'life drawing' is the true improvement. Well, yeah i realized all the things you said as valid reasons you just explained it all better than I could have and I was too tired to get into all that. I don't think it was unfair because like you said it's true and it was a compliment. Of course Tim taking more time and doing all the art himself the art is going to improve. Along with all the time he's had to improve his craft like you said. I was just making a simple observation that i don't remember being mentioned before. Maybe it was too simple of a observation but at least you understood and explained it well. Maybe we should have a spoiler warning thread on the story?
